Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time for reflection, community engagement, and honoring the legacy of a civil rights icon. If you’re in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas, there are several library events and activities leading up to and on MLK Day that you might find enriching. Here’s a curated list to help you plan your participation:

Readers Theater: Spotlight on MLK Day
Join the West Oak Lane Library for a series of sessions where participants can choose or create poems and speeches to recite in recognition of Dr. King. The focus is on the advocacy that led to the holiday celebrating Dr. King and the significance of his contributions to the civil rights movement. Sessions are held on January 13, 14, 15, and 16 at 3:45 PM. West Oak Lane Library – Free Library

Crafting for MLK
The Wynnefield Library hosts a crafting event on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:30 AM. Sisters Interacting Through Stitches and the Free Library of Philadelphia invite community members to engage in crafting activities in honor of Dr. King. Wynnefield Library – Free Library

 2025 MLK Service Day at Haverford Library
On Monday, January 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM, the Haverford Library invites you to join in beautifying the library space. This event aims to create a welcoming environment for the Haddington community to learn, commune, and build together. Supported by the Philadelphia System of Care and Plant&People. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the National Constitution Center
The National Constitution Center honors Dr. King’s legacy with a day of events on January 20, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free. Activities include a school supplies drive, arts and crafts, artifact spotlight sessions, readings of the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, and family concerts featuring songs inspired by the civil rights era. Penn Reads Literacy & Children’s Art Project
As part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 20, 2025, the University of Pennsylvania is organizing a literacy and children’s art project. The event includes book donations and art activities aimed at promoting literacy and honoring Dr. King’s legacy.
