The Village | Issue Three: Fighting for the Freedom of Byron Greene

By Julia Press Simmons

When one of us suffers, the whole village feels the weight. Today, our village must stand with Jamesina (Jami) Greene, a mother, grandmother, and social justice advocate who has dedicated her life to acknowledging, addressing, and activating change.

Her son, Byron Greene (DOC #336-433), has been incarcerated for nearly two decades for a crime he did not commit. He was handed a devastating and disproportionate 50-year sentence for assault—despite overwhelming evidence of judicial misconduct and his unwavering declaration of innocence.

A Flawed Trial

Byron has maintained his innocence from the very beginning. The evidence used to convict him was mishandled and misrepresented. His trial was unfair, riddled with misconduct, bias, and legal missteps. It failed to meet the very standards of justice.

50 Years for Assault Is Outrageous

A 50-year sentence for an assault charge is both excessive and inhumane. This punishment does not align with fairness, rehabilitation, or justice. It stands as a glaring example of systemic overreach and racial injustice.

A Mother’s Resolve

Jami has never stopped fighting for her son. For nearly twenty years, she has carried Byron’s story forward with courage and determination. Now, she is calling on all of us—her village—to help amplify this fight for freedom.

How You Can Help

Jami has started a Change.org petition demanding a full review of Byron’s case, the overturning of his wrongful conviction, and his immediate release. The petition is close to its first milestone of 100 signatures—and every signature counts.

This case is not just about one man. It is about a broken system, about fairness denied, and about the strength of a family unwilling to give up.

Byron deserves justice. Jami deserves to embrace her son outside prison walls. And we, as a community, must stand together to make sure this injustice does not go unseen.

Stand with Jami. Stand with Byron. Stand for justice.
