Octavia’s Bookshelf: A Beacon of Community and Literature in Need of Support
2 min readNestled in the heart of Pasadena, CA, lies Octavia’s Bookshelf, a haven for readers from all walks of life. Located at 1365 North Hill Ave, the bookstore has become a cornerstone for lovers of literature, offering a unique collection of books authored by BIPOC writers. Founded by Nikki, a passionate bibliophile, the bookstore reflects her lifelong love for books that have provided her with comfort, inspiration, and discovery. From early childhood, Nikki found solace in the pages of books, which not only opened new worlds but also reflected her own experiences and potential.
Nikki’s journey with books eventually led to the creation of Octavia’s Bookshelf, named in honor of the legendary science fiction writer Octavia Butler. The bookstore is more than just a retail space; it’s a community hub where patrons can discover new favorite reads, enjoy a cup of coffee, and immerse themselves in a welcoming environment filled with specially curated products from artisans worldwide and locally.
Since its opening last year, Octavia’s Bookshelf has garnered tremendous support and excitement from the community. Despite the rewarding experiences, Nikki candidly shares the challenges she faces as a Black woman entrepreneur in the bookselling industry. The journey has been fraught with financial hurdles and the steep learning curve of retail management. Yet, it is the community’s unwavering support that has sustained her through sleepless nights and difficult times.
Today, Octavia’s Bookshelf is at a critical juncture. Nikki is reaching out for help, seeking an urgent influx of funds to keep the doors open and the shelves stocked. The financial challenges are daunting, but the resolve to maintain this vital community space is stronger than ever. Nikki’s appeal is heartfelt and direct: she needs our support to ensure that Octavia’s Bookshelf continues to be a place of discovery, connection, and cultural enrichment.
