A Guide to Thriving through the chill By Shonda Mayes
A lot of folks swear by spring and summer—the warmth, the long days, the outdoor energy, cookouts, festivals, and concerts. For me, that’s prime time for catching flights, hanging with my girls, and just basking in the sunshine with my toes out in some cute sandals. Sun’s up? Coat off. I’m there every time wearing a big cheesy smile.
But then comes fall and winter, and everything switches up. The daylight disappears too fast, the cold kicks in, and suddenly I’m layering up like I’m headed for Antarctica. And yeah, I get it—some of y’all love sweater weather and pumpkin spice vibes.

Shonda Mayes was born and raised in the Hampton Roads/757 area of Virginia. Considered a “Jackie of all Trades,” Shonda has many talents. Shonda is the CEO and Founder of Grit, Grind, and Grace Publications. Gifted in writing and public speaking, Shonda decided to answer the call on her life and use her experiences to help other people. She’s down-to-earth-and relatable due to the many life experiences that have molded her into the woman she is today. Her authenticity and transparency has allowed her to connect with others on a different level. Shonda also has a huge love for acting and was cast as Yvette from the popular “Pitbulls in a Skirt” book series by Mikal Malone. This was her first major acting role and she fell in love with the art of bringing characters to life. Shonda hopes to further pursue her dreams of acting.
Shonda also writes under the pen name, Ten Santana, and has released one book under that name.
