The fifth annual Black Readers Appreciation Event (BRAE) is underway, giving book lovers an opportunity to discover new authors, explore different genres, and download free ebooks from Black writers around the world.

Running November 4–8, 2026, the virtual literary event brings together independent authors and readers through a shared appreciation for Black literature.

Founded by author A.A. Lewis, BRAE began as a way to thank readers for their continued support of independent Black authors. Five years later, the event has grown into an annual celebration that introduces thousands of readers to books they might not otherwise discover.

A Celebration Built Around Readers

Readers play an essential role in the success of independent authors. Every book purchased, review written, and recommendation shared helps writers reach new audiences and build lasting careers.

BRAE recognizes that relationship by inviting participating authors to make their books available at no cost during the event.

This year’s celebration began November 4 with Audiobook & Narrator Day, featuring opportunities to connect with the voices behind the stories. The free ebook celebration runs November 5–8, with a special one-day ebook offering on November 5.

Readers can browse selections across numerous genres, including urban fiction, romance, fantasy, science fiction, thrillers, children’s literature, nonfiction, poetry, and more.

Creating Opportunities for Independent Authors

For independent Black authors, visibility remains one of the greatest challenges in publishing. Without the marketing resources available to major publishing houses, many writers rely on grassroots promotion, reader recommendations, and literary communities to get their books into new hands.

BRAE offers participating authors another way to introduce their work to potential readers.

While free downloads don’t guarantee future sales or reviews, they can introduce writers to audiences who may return to purchase additional titles, recommend their work, or follow their publishing careers.

The event also continues to expand its reach through Powered by BRAE, an initiative designed to bring authors and readers together through in-person literary events.

How Readers Can Participate

Readers can visit the official BRAE website to explore the participating authors and browse books by genre.

Most participating ebooks are offered free during the celebration, although some selections may be discounted rather than free. Readers are encouraged to check individual listings for availability and pricing.

The free ebook event runs through Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

For readers looking to expand their digital libraries or discover a new favorite author, BRAE offers a chance to explore the range of stories being published by Black independent writers.
