Write Your Novel in 2026: Week 12: Finishing your draft
2 min read
YouYou have spent the last eleven weeks building your story. You developed your idea, shaped your characters, strengthened your structure, and worked through resistance. The focus now is completing the draft and bringing the story to a full, finished form. Week 12 centers on reaching the end of the manuscript.
A completed draft gives you something real to revise. Many writers spend time revisiting earlier sections, adjusting outlines, or restarting projects, which slows progress. Moving forward to the end of the story creates a complete version that can be improved during editing.
At this stage, progress comes from continuation rather than refinement.
Step 1: Identify Where You Are
Before finishing, take a clear look at your current position in the draft.
Are you:
- In the middle of the story
- Approaching the ending
- Writing the final scenes
Knowing where you are helps you determine what remains.
Your job this week:
Write down your current position in the draft.
Step 2: List What’s Left
Finishing becomes easier when the remaining work is visible.
Instead of thinking about the entire book, focus on what still needs to be written to reach the ending.
This might include:
- Final confrontations
- Resolution scenes
- Closing moments
Your job this week:
List the remaining scenes or moments needed to complete your draft.
Step 3: Set a Completion Plan
A draft is finished through consistent action.
Choose a realistic timeline and define how you will reach the end. Short, focused writing sessions can be enough to complete the remaining sections.
Your job this week:
Set a target date for finishing your draft and outline how you will get there.
Step 4: Continue Until the End
At this stage, forward movement is the priority.
You may notice areas that need improvement. Those can be addressed during editing. Reaching the end ensures the full story exists on the page.
Your job this week:
Continue writing until you reach the final scene.
Week 12 Challenge
